And they have succeeded.
Zeiss Victory FL 10×42 Binoculars: Review & Rating
Before we talk about the variety of reasons why these binocs are so great, let’s take a look at the device’s details:
- Magnification – 10x
- Objective Lens Diameter – 42mm
- Eye Relief – 16mm
- Exit Pupil – 4.2mm
- Field of View (at 1,000 yards) 330feet
- Prism – Roof
- Weight – 27 ounces
At first glance, these specifications don’t seem particularly spectacular. They are very lightweight, but not ridiculously so. They have a great Field of View, but nothing that blows the competition away. The eye relief is nice and long, but it isn’t a unique measurement in the industry. All in all, if these numbers are all you had to go by, you might think that this is a really decent pair of binoculars.
But decent doesn’t even begin to describe Zeiss Victory binoculars.
The FL in the series’ name refers to the fluoride in the lenses’ glass, offering maximum contrast, sharpness, and color fidelity.
What really sets these apart from the crowds, though, is the use of LotuTec lens coating, which is unique to the Zeiss binoculars and can be found nowhere else. The LotuTec coating allows more than 90 percent light transmission into the barrels, giving you the sharpest, cleanest, and clearest imagery imaginable. It’s like watching a high definition television for the very first time.
The LotuTec coating also makes your lenses beyond easy to clean. It repels water, dust, and oil, so that smears are much less likely to appear in your scope of view.
Beyond the lens coating, what makes the Zeiss Victory FL 10×42 binocs truly superior is the construction of the body. While most manufacturers create their specs with plastic these days, Zeiss continues to craft their casings with metal. This not only gives them a great feel, but it makes them that much tougher in the field.
What’s the drawback then? Well, with Zeiss, there’s usually only one: the high price. These binocs will cost you close to $2,000 from Amazon.com. You may be able to get a cheaper pair through eBay or another online marketplace, but you can’t ensure the quality of the device if it isn’t coming straight from the manufacturer.
Not to mention, the excellent Zeiss warranty is void on a secondhand pair.
